Social Expedition Podcast: Dr. Markman, I Presume

Posted on 27 November 2009 by LunaWeb

At Dr.Markman' s OfficeDuring this week’s Social Expedition Podcast, we visit the office of the University of Memphis’ Dr. Kris Markman.

Together, we chat about UofM, living in midtown, and – most importantly – podcasting. Given her radio background and current academic focus in social media, Dr. Markman is a perfect choice for an interviewee.

So perfect, in fact, that our interview with her is the whole podcast.

Dr. Markman will also be the guest speaker at the Dec. 2 Social Expedition Breakfast, which I think we may have mentioned before.

You have the same listening options as usual: Download the podcast, click below to listen, or subscribe in iTunes.

Enjoy, and have a great Thanksgiving!

a quick comment about the myths of social interaction…

We see it today with twitter, facebook, etc, but we’ve seen similar myths 15 years ago with IRC chat channels, BBS, online games, etc. As the population ages I think we’ll all have a better understanding of what social interaction really is about.

15 years ago if a parent saw their kid typing at a computer all day, they probably wouldn’t understand that they were interacting with a 100 different people, playing games, making jokes, learning new stuff, etc. All they see is a kid staring at a computer screen. Flash forward 15 years when the kid is now a parent, who does she/he view these social networks?

I’d also lump in the MMORPGs with the likes of twitter, facebook, etc. A large part of the games today is about social interaction. And again, there’s a huge misunderstanding about these types of games.

And yeah, the FedEx incident was funny to watch.
