Podcast #29: Help for Millington, Memphis Connect, and, as usual, Facebook updates
Posted on 13 May 2010 by LunaWeb
A few weekends ago, Memphis endured torrential downpours of rain and tornado sirens, and the Nashville area was named a national disaster area after massive flooding. Not as much attention was given, however, to the devastation in and around Millington. Hundreds of people in the area were affected, and many lost their homes and cars.
So last night, at the Memphis Connect one-year anniversary celebration, Dave caught up with Aisling Maki and Dierdre Oglesby of Memphis Loves Kids, which is organizing aid for Millington. They are collecting donations of money, food, blankets and gifts cards from Wal-Mart and Kroger to give to the Millington crisis center. Donations of time are also greatly appreciated, so if you can take a few hours to help the clean-up effort, it can make a huge difference. To find out how you can help, contact the crisis center at 901-872-HELP or contact Memphis Loves Kids through their website. Also, look for tweets from @smexpedition. We’re trying to put together a team to help this weekend.
Then (of course) we discussed Facebook, which seems determined to stay in the daily headlines. Lately, it’s the new website plug-ins and opt-in pilot programs that are causing a fuss. The plug-ins, especially the ‘Like’ button, are actually pretty great. As far as privacy goes, though, it’s crucial for every Facebook user to go through their settings with a fine-toothed comb.
