Social Expedition Podcast #10: Social Search and Privacy, Kooky Canuck and Hovercars

Time passes all too quickly, and we’ve reached our tenth episode. Though we weren’t sure what the traditional gift for the 10th anniversary is (turns out it’s tin or aluminum), we have always known what we’re here for – celebrating the ideas behind and progress of social media, as it expands into both our personal and business lives.

Google seems to have jumped the gun a little bit on releasing their new real time social search. It’s going to drastically affect the way businesses and marketers behave on social networks, even if it doesn’t much change the way people search.

One major risk faced by businesses who wish to optimize their social networks for the new social search is that they’ll put their customers off with their behavior – this is more critical than ever, given that Facebook’s new privacy settings make it easier than ever to make annoying business practices (and annoying relatives) disappear from your personal profile.

We talked with Shawn Danko from downtown Memphis’ Kooky Canuck restaurant about how he got into using social media to promote his business and build relationships with customers.

You can find Kooky Canuck’s social efforts on Twitter and Facebook.

We also give a nice shout out to the Peabody Hotel’s social networking – they are our Memphis Tweeter of the Week.

As for upcoming events, Friday will see our next Core Conversation podcast, the first of a two-part series on predictions for 2010 and what you think will happen with social media and the internet.

Lastly, if you’re a podcaster, or if you’re looking to get into podcasting, or if you’re just curious to meet other people who are addicted to listening to podcasts, we’re having MemCast – a gathering of Memphis podcasters and podcast enthusiasts – on Monday, Dec. 14. For information about that, follow MemCast on Twitter.

Social Expedition Podcast #9: Brent Diggs, Dr. Toboggans & The Mysteries of FourSquare

On this week’s podcast, you get two guests for the price of one! We sat down with blogger/actor/comedian/social media enthusiast Brent Diggs and his friend the infamous Dr. Toboggans.

In addition to his indentured servitude to Dr. Toboggans, Brent manages a laundry list of online presences, belonging to him, his band Danger Couch and his church, LifeLink. We talked to him about that very juggling act, and also the challenge of maintaining authenticity — even, in some cases, while being entirely inauthentic.

Matthew, Elizabeth, Dave, and the (in)famous Dr. Toboggans.

In the midst of our conversation, old Toboggans himself burst in to the interview (no doubt upset that Brent had chosen to record our podcast without him). We had a few minutes to find out about Dr. Toboggans’ Mind Over Memphis project and how he’s helping to stomp out good deed doing all over Memphis.

We also get into the FourSquare game in this episode, talking about the merits and utilities of this newest social media sensation, and even making some predictions about where it might be headed in the future. And that big letter from Mark Zuckerberg floating at the top of your Facebook page? Yeah, we get to that, too.

As always, you can download the podcast here, subscribe in iTunes, or click the play button at the bottom of this post to listen on this page.

Be sure to join us on Friday for The Core Conversation — this week’s topic is social media and the holidays. How will our holiday traditions and behaviors be changed or influenced by our social media usage? Weigh in at 11:30 a.m. Friday by calling (646) – 721-9429.

Social Expedition Podcast: Dr. Markman, I Presume

At Dr.Markman' s OfficeDuring this week’s Social Expedition Podcast, we visit the office of the University of Memphis’ Dr. Kris Markman.

Together, we chat about UofM, living in midtown, and – most importantly – podcasting. Given her radio background and current academic focus in social media, Dr. Markman is a perfect choice for an interviewee.

So perfect, in fact, that our interview with her is the whole podcast.

Dr. Markman will also be the guest speaker at the Dec. 2 Social Expedition Breakfast, which I think we may have mentioned before.

You have the same listening options as usual: Download the podcast, click below to listen, or subscribe in iTunes.

Enjoy, and have a great Thanksgiving!

Social Expedition Podcast #7: Retweets, Bebo, GPAC

As we’re approaching Thanksgiving, we’re finding it hard to shake the feeling that the year is disappearing faster than we can come to a consensus about what we’ll be calling next year.

Even November is more than halfway through – the midpoint being marked by BarCamp Memphis. Even mid-November is bookended by tomorrow’s Core Conversation call-in podcast, wherein we’ll be hosting a BarCamp Memphis – oriented Feedback Friday. We’d love for the next BarCamp to be even better – and we need your help to make that happen.

It seems that Bebo, the social network popular in the UK, is improving themselves, too, by including a button to report abuse – not for spam, but for trolls and bullies.

Facebook is similarly trying to improve themselves, but with some tweaks to the options available to advertisers – but in a way that may ruffle a few feathers.

Our feelings about Twitter’s new built-in retweeting function are similarly mixed.

Mpact Memphis, however, is unassailably positive. No qualms here about saying that we like them. That’s why they’re our Memphis Tweeter of the Week.

We sat down with The Germantown Performing Arts Centre‘s Carrie Corbett and Tania Castroverde Moskalenko to talk with them about their social efforts, and how they use Facebook in the everyday life of the organization.

Social Expedition Podcast #6: Buck Rogers, Google Wi-Fi, Everest the Buffalo

We welcomed local daddy blogger (who finds the label terribly limiting) Buck Rogers to the studio for this week’s Social Expedition podcast — though perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to label him as just that. Buck talked to us about exploring new territories with his blog, including a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of Dunkin Donuts.

With a lengthy professional background in marketing, Buck is just the guy to talk to about blogging and personal branding online, though he says he’s just getting started at it. We talked customer service and customer relationships as well as dabbling in some social media news, including a holiday gift to travelers from Google.

Social Expedition Podcast #5: Brand Identity, Droid, South of Beale

For today’s edition of the Social Expedition Podcast, we brought in Ed Cabigao from Memphis gastropub, South of Beale, to talk about his use of social media for the pub. The story of how he used Twitter and Facebook to share about what it’s like to open a restaurant – and how that built anticipation for its opening – is quickly becoming local legend.

We also talked about Sprint’s customer service, brand identity – specifically the Bayer logo – and the Motorola Droid.

Our SocialMemphis segment featured Memphis City School’s new student social network about to be rolled out, with this week’s featured Twitter-er being @DowntownMemphis.

You can download the podcast here, stream it by clicking the play button below, or subscribe in iTunes.

If you want more, tomorrow is our Core Conversation podcast – call in to participate or listen live from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. There’s more information, including the phone number, available at our BlogTalkRadio page.

Social Expedition Podcast #4: Social search and MemphisConnect.com

In the fourth installment of The Social Expedition Podcast, we talked with Elizabeth Lemmonds (who happens to be the speaker at next week’s breakfast) about community blogging, promoting our city and how sites like MemphisConnect.com are contributing to the conversation.

It’s a fitting time to be on this topic with the launch this week of Google’s social search, a tool that displays your online peers’ opinions and comments right alongside traditional sources in search engine results. We tackle the social search, plus social media news in Memphis, how city entities are using social media to improve services and more in this episode.

Social Expedition Podcast #3: Mashable, Memphis Zoo, Shut Up and Listen

In this week’s Social Expedition Podcast, we talk about the glut of information issuing forth from the fountain that is Mashable, the brand-new list functionality on Twitter, talk about the basics of Facebook, and praise the Memphis Zoo’s use of Twitter.

We also sit down with the guys from the “Shut Up and Listen” podcast, who have a lot to say about podcasting, Web culture, and more – so much, in fact, that we couldn’t fit it all on the podcast. Stick around; we’ll be posting the unedited interview shortly.

Core Conversation #1: Feedback Friday

You may have seen our post earlier today – you may even have listened in, but if you didn’t, we’ve been using the call-in podcasting tool, BlogTalkRadio to create a weekly participatory podcast.

In this week’s edition, we batted around the idea of repositioning Twitter’s constant trending topic, Follow Friday, usually branded #FollowFriday or #FF, as Feedback Friday, or #FeedbackFriday.

The idea is simply that if you’re unsure about whether you’re using Twitter – or any other social networking service – to its fullest potential, you can put word out there that you’re open to feedback.

During today’s conversation, we talked about a lot of Twitter habits that both die hard and need to die, like oversharing, overtweeting, and overmentioning.

Social Expedition Podcast #2: healthcare, something good, feedback friday

This week, we got Dana Lewis on the line. She’s a senior PR/political science major at the University of Alabama, but what brought her to our attention is that she’s a health communications consultant who spurred a worldwide conversation about health care and social media by regularly hosting chats on Twitter based around the #hcsm hashtag.

Download the podcast to hear that conversation and so much more, including: hash browns. Mmmm.

In this episode:

  • Social Business: Business is becoming increasingly transparent, where once it was isolated. We talk about David Armano’s recent presentation about social business, and how every aspect of business is becoming more a matter of collaboration rather than heroics.
  • SocialMemphis: We spotlight MIFA’s “Something Good in Memphis” campaign, which focuses on people who do good things in and around Memphis and promotes their actions and efforts though social media. Learn more about our SocialMemphis project on Twitter and Facebook.
  • We talk with Dana Lewis, a healthcare communications consultant (and University of Alabama senior), who started the #hcsm hashtag for an ongoing, worldwide chat about healthcare communications and social media. Every Sunday at 8 p.m. Central time, she posts topics for group discussion and then participates both from her own Twitter account, and from @healthsocmed.
  • Hashtags: we talk about what they are, how they work, and ones we use, including #smexp and #barcampmem.
  • Upcoming Events: It’s a busy fall here at the Social Expedition, including two events Friday: the inaugural Feedback Friday and a tweetup before a showing of “Where the Wild Things Are.”
  • As we wind things down, we offer our condolences to those who have not yet received Google Wave invitations, and talk about the methodology for keeping the beta testing so limited.

We also mentioned some tools that people use to follow the #hcsm conversation:
