Nom nom buttercream icing! Reeeeal buttercream with butter and cream and no Crisco and oh, delicious.
But enough about the cupcakes (or is it, really?), Jennifer Marshall is one peppy, fun lady and we were thrilled to sit down with her to talk about her social media efforts. Jennifer has a cupcake business called BFF Cupcakes, and she and her boyfriend hand deliver their delectable desserts to the Memphis area in their outrageous pink Jeep (see photo). One of the most interesting things about their business to us as Expeditioners/Expeditionaries is that they do not have a website, but instead focus their online presence entirely on Facebook.
BFF Cupcakes makes great model for any small business who may not have the time or resources for a full website. Even if a website is the eventual goal, you can always buy the URL address you’ll want, and just point it to your Facebook page in the meantime!
Listen in for Jennifer’s take on some of the benefits and downfalls of this small business solution. Then, we get into some of the current trends, from “easy” mobile app development software to Rachel’s new Foursquare badges.
When you’re done listening, head over to the LunaWeb offices at 5:30 for some geek speak and pizza (a truly inspired combo) because it’s Twilight Camp tonight! We’re at 5180 Park Ave. Suite 305, and it’s free and super casual. Just bring yourself (mobile device optional), stay as long as you can, relax and recharge (your iPhone? Ba dum CHA!).

You’d know Mark if you ran into him. He’s pretty tall, good humored, and is usually wearing a Mark’s Menus tee-shirt. Also, he’s a talented developer and can deliver a winning escalator pitch. On this week’s podcast, he shares some of the hurdles and triumphs he’s met in co-founding Mark’s Menus. If you live in Memphis and like to eat, visit this website. It’s clean, pretty, easy to navigate, and (best of all) it’s all about food! They have hundreds of full menus and reviews on individual dishes. You can browse what you want for dinner while you listen to the podcast!
Or, find them on Twitter, Facebook, or get the iPhone or Android app. Follow Mark himself at @mdinstuhl.
Listen in to the rest for our coverage of yesterday’s Facebook announcement, especially if you’d like a pair of free Gap jeans! We’ve got an update on the Foursquare/Chicago mayoral election, but that’s not the only business Foursquare has their hand in…
They’re sending us BarCamp swag! So thanks, Foursquare. We are loyal enthusiasts.
Lastly, remember to turn your clocks back an hour on Sunday (fall falls back). We’d hate for you to be early somewhere.

Alright, that may have been an obvious title for the podcast, given the guest. But a fascinating guest! Maggie Louie is the Online Media Specialist and Product Manager at the E. W. Scripps Company, which (amongst other things), is responsible for the awesome Inside Scoop daily deals, which can be seen everyday on the homepage of The Commercial Appeal and GoMemphis.com.
In addition to being an e-commerce pro, we were delighted to find out Maggie is something of a geek. Listen in to hear us get nerdy about click-through rates, the “post-deal-dip,” and learn about the new daily deal site that Scripps will be rolling out in Memphis shortly.
Connect with the Inside Scoop on their website, sign up to get the emails, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter @insidescoop901. Or, find Maggie herself on Twitter @maggielouie.
In other podcast minutes, we’ve got some highlights from the Apple event yesterday, plus a truly unique merging of Foursquare and politics. Sounds like a bad idea? Well, it’s still fun to talk about.
We hope to see you tonight at Twilight Camp (5:30 at the LunaWeb offices), but definitely get excited about BarCampMemphis, which is JUST around the corner on November 13. Follow BarCamp news on Twitter at @barcampmemphis, connect on Facebook, or just check out the website!

We enjoyed another unconventional Social Expedition podcast this week (will we ever go back to the standard format? Maybe not), this time using a nifty little service called BlogTalkRadio. It’s a super simple way to host a live podcast show that people can call into and participate in!
As many of you know, LaunchMemphis held the first ever IgniteMemphis event on Tuesday, October 12, and if we may be so bold, was quite a success. The event went so well in fact, that LaunchMemphis is already setting up meetings to plan for the next one, which may be in February or March.
In preparation for an IgniteMemphis revival, we set up the live podcast and encouraged folks to call in with feedback. We’re always interested to hear what people liked, and especially what they didn’t, so we can improve the next one. One thing we have already learned to do differently for next time is to announce the feedback podcast at the event, instead of trying to contact people afterwards. LaunchMemphis founder Eric Mathews called in, but unfortunately, the word didn’t seem to get out to the general public.
The three of us did have a great chance to break down some key points of the presentation though, including our favorite presentations, and how the event ties in with the mission of LaunchMemphis. It’s all about making things happen in this city, and Ignite was (and will be) a great way for anyone to find out how they can contribute to the thriving entrepreneurial and cultural spirit of Memphis.

The Social Expedition once again broke free of the office (off expeditioning again!) this week, and we found Dr. Frances Fabian, a professor at the University of Memphis’s Fogelman College of Business & Economics. Currently, she is teaching courses on business strategy and entrepreneurship at the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels.
It’s no secret that Memphis is growing as an entrepreneurial hub of the country, and Dr. Fabian has some incredible forward-thinking views on the subject, particularly where the Internet is concerned. In the interview, she dives into her opinions on the benefits of online communities, the dangers of creating an echo chamber, and the importance of breaking out of your comfort zone. In the podcast, she recommends Ted as great places to start expanding your horizons.
Or, if you’d prefer to expand your horizons with us on Tuesday, do not miss the very first IgniteMemphis event! It’s October 12, 7 pm at the new Playhouse on the Square. We’ve got 16 speakers who all have exactly 5 minutes each to share a short presentation on a topic they are passionate about. You’re almost guaranteed to learn something, and hopefully it will ignite some great conversation! Learn more about the event here, or go ahead and get your tickets here! Dr. Fabian has recommended it to her students, and we second that. And for everyone, not just her students.
For more information on Dr. Fabian’s work, including research papers, check out her website here, or learn more about her work on the college website here.

This week, the podcast got a field trip! Dave went down to EmergeMemphis with mini mp3 recorder in hand to sit down with Eric Mathews of LaunchMemphis, and their special guest of the evening, Melissa Pierce.
A few of our regular expedition folks joined us last night for a screening of Melissa’s new documentary, Life in Perpetual Beta, which explores the ways in which technology and the Internet are changing our culture. Are we more creative now that the Internet has given us an open forum to display our art? Are we more open and authentic? Melissa’s film dives head first into these issues and more. Dave, Eric, and Melissa tackle a few of them with this podcast interview!
Give it a listen, and then don’t miss the next big LaunchMemphis event: IgniteMemphis on October 12.

After a brief podcast hiatus, we have returned! And with a great interview with Glen Thomas from MLGW. Although the utility company is perhaps not in an industry one would immediately imagine finding much use social media, MLGW has found Twitter to be especially effective as a quick communication tool. They answer questions about outages and billing, and even share links about energy conservation! What had been a faceless utility company now has a voice and personality – and that’s what we love about social media. Find MLGW on Twitter at @MLGW or on Facebook!
Then there’s the 8 million events coming up! First and foremost, we want you to know about the Memphis Screening of the new documentary, Life in Perpetual Beta, sponsored by LaunchMemphis, FuelFilm, and LunaWeb. This crowd-sourced film set out to ask members of the online community for their thoughts on how the internet and technology are shaping modern life and society. On September 29 (that’s THIS Wednesday!), the producer, Melissa Pierce, will be joining us for a Q & A session right after the film. We are so very excited about meeting and talking with Melissa that we actually went out and did our own mini-interviews! We call it Memphis Edition: Life in Perpetual Beta. Check it out on YouTube, then be sure to register for tickets to the event HERE! They’re only $10, but Like the Facebook page to stay updated on upcoming promotions. Then follow Melissa at @melissapierce!
Then there’s the other upcoming events:

Are you sitting down? Well stand up and get going to one of the multitudinous events happening around the Mid-South! Autumn is BarCamp season, social media is in the air, and many of the tickets are free.
So go! Jonesboro is only an hour or so away, and we’re trying to put together a caravan to go to Birmingham for WordCamp.
But besides our raves about BarCamps, the podcast also includes a great interview with Michael Synk: the business man, the consultant, the book club organizer. In one of his many roles, Michael coordinates the In-Synk Executive Huddle, a peer group for entrepreneurs and CEOs. In the same vein, he has also formed a Business Book Club, which he describes as “the book club for people who don’t have time to read the book.” RSVP here for the next meeting, which is tomorrow, September 3, 8 am at Davis Kidd, when they’ll be reviewing Blue Ocean Strategy.
After you listen in, find Michael on the web at www.in-synk.com, or on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook!

We’re getting super pumped for the September breakfast after sitting down with Chris O’Conner and Zach Waters from Prodigi Arts to talk about video! This talented group of designers, animators, videographers and illustrators are creating a wide range of video content, from 3D animations to heartfelt testimonials. And one of their ranks just won an Emmy! In our interview, Chris and Zach share some of their challenges as a relatively new business and some of their tips for folks trying to make their own web videos. Definitely check out their website at Prodigi Arts, and connect with them on Facebook!
Then there’s that big news in the social space this week: Facebook Places. We are curious as ever to see how the launch affects the established location-based services, like Foursquare and Gowalla. We are still big proponents of Foursquare rewards in Memphis, though, and we’re even starting a website dedicated to it! It’s not live yet, but it’s on the way!
So join us for the breakfast for sure, on September 1 at 7:30 am at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. Chris will share some more insight into the world of video, and then we’ll jump into the core conversation in which we talk about what social media issues are on your mind! RSVP here.
The September Twilight Camp will be on September 16th, at LunaWeb this time (Davis Kidd must be getting tired of us, after all). 5:30 to 7:30, don’t miss it!

Privacy. Identity. Innovation. Not to mention a great place for Dave to grab some great interviews!
First up, we’ve got a brilliantly practical new idea from Andrew Maguire of InternMatch.com, a new and expanding website linking college students to local internships. Find them on Twitter, too, at @internmatch.
Next, Dave speaks with another innovator in the job hunters market, Carmen Hudson of TweetaJob.com, which offers job seekers the opportunity to sign up for free and receive only tweets about positions in the location and industry they specify. Their general company handle is @tweetajob, and Carmen can be personally found @peopleshark.
Moving onto the more privacy oriented interviews, Dave speaks with Becky Pezely from the Common Data Project, also on Twitter @commondata.
Lastly, we’ve got Howard Fried from Secret 123, a service which adds an encryption button to Microsoft Outlook to code your emails! Find them on Twitter @secret123.
Hope to see you tonight at Twilight Camp at 5:30, but if you can’t make it, don’t miss the breakfast on September 1, with guest speaker Chris O’Conner of Prodigi Arts. See you soon!
