Rethink the term “Young Entrepreneur,” folks, because Cole is an 11 year old man-with-a-plan. This past weekend, Cole took his and his brother’s idea for a musical instrument tutorial site to the 48 Hour Launch. Now, he has a domain, a Facebook page, Twitter (@bandtutor), and some real momentum behind his clever idea. Listen in [...] [...more]
Coming to an app-store near you: StiQRd! Founded right here in snowy (at least for today) Memphis, Tennessee, StiQRd is a location-based check-in service (like Foursquare or Gowalla), but it’s unique characteristic is in the program’s marriage of QR codes and GPS location. Aaron Prather, the CEO, is the real expert though, so we’ll let [...] [...more]
When Dominique sat down at our podcasting table, we were struck by her big smile and obvious savvy. The Hispanic market in Memphis is ever growing, and it will become increasingly important that businesses do not neglect this portion of the community. But it’s not as easy as just plugging copy into an automatic translator. [...] [...more]
Nom nom buttercream icing! Reeeeal buttercream with butter and cream and no Crisco and oh, delicious. But enough about the cupcakes (or is it, really?), Jennifer Marshall is one peppy, fun lady and we were thrilled to sit down with her to talk about her social media efforts. Jennifer has a cupcake business called BFF [...] [...more]

On this week’s podcast, he shares some of the hurdles and triumphs he’s met in co-founding Mark’s Menus. If you live in [...] [...more]

Check OUT that alliteration! But seriously, the Social Expedition was delighted to welcome back one of our former hosts, this time as our interviewee. First, a participant created a Foursquare check-in for Twilight Camp, and everyone with access to the program made their presence known. This launched a comparison of Gowalla to Foursquare. Gowalla has a better iPad application (Foursquare just has the iPhone app, which you can zoom in on for the iPad’s bigger screen) But the Gowalla [...] [...more]
Yes, Android danger! No, but really - everyone who owns an Android needs to be aware of this study by SMobile. The high and low of it is that Google doesn't put the Android apps through the same kind of intense scrutiny that Apple does for it's market. Although we are tempted to just select "Allow" over and over to reach the end of an installation and get to eating ghosts with our new Pac-Man app, you may just allow spyware onto your phone. Scroll down into the study for a list of permissions your app may ask for and what exactly they mean. Do you know for a fact that you haven't granted any apps permission to PROCESS_OUTGOING_CALLS? It sounds harmless enough, but it means the app can monitor, modify, or even abort your outgoing calls. [...more]
This week, the Social Expedition explores the idea of unplugging from technology – a difficult feat for most of us. We’ve got an update from WordPress, a glitch in Intuit, and a bit of irony from Mark Zuckerberg. We argue some finer points of the Android versus iPhone debate, only to find that the prodigal [...] [...more]
