Also, he’s a talented developer and can deliver a winning escalator pitch. On this week’s podcast, he shares some of the hurdles and triumphs he’s met in co-founding Mark’s Menus. If you live in Memphis and like to eat, visit this website. It’s clean, pretty, easy to navigate, and (best of all) it’s all about food! They have hundreds of full menus and reviews on individual dishes.

Alright, that may have been an obvious title for the podcast, given the guest. But a fascinating guest! Maggie Louie is the Online Media Specialist and Product Manager at the E. W. Scripps Company, which (amongst other things), is responsible for the awesome Inside Scoop daily deals, which can be seen everyday on the homepage of The Commercial Appeal and GoMemphis.com.

In addition to being an e-commerce pro, we were delighted to find out Maggie is something of a geek. Listen in to hear us get nerdy about click-through rates, the “post-deal-dip,” and learn about the new daily deal site that Scripps will be rolling out in Memphis shortly.

Connect with the Inside Scoop on their website, sign up to get the emails, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter @insidescoop901. Or, find Maggie herself on Twitter @maggielouie.

In other podcast minutes, we’ve got some highlights from the Apple event yesterday, plus a truly unique merging of Foursquare and politics. Sounds like a bad idea? Well, it’s still fun to talk about.

We hope to see you tonight at Twilight Camp (5:30 at the LunaWeb offices), but definitely get excited about BarCampMemphis, which is JUST around the corner on November 13. Although the utility company is perhaps not in an industry one would immediately imagine finding much use social media, MLGW has found Twitter to be especially effective as a quick communication tool. They answer questions about outages and billing, and even share links about energy conservation! What had been a faceless utility company now has a voice and personality – and that’s what we love about social media. Find MLGW on Twitter at @MLGW or on Facebook!

The date isn’t final yet, but BarCamp Memphis will be coming up in November!
Elizabeth Cawein, long-time friend of the Social Expedition, loaned us some of her time from Memphis Music Foundation to speak at our August Breakfast. She shared with us some of the ways in which social media is helping Memphis musicians grow and thrive. Besides the usual Facebook and Twitter, Elizabeth also recommends artists utilize sites like bandcamp.com and the old-standby MySpace to connect with their audiences, build relationships, and expand their fan-base.

Plus, Elizabeth issued a challenge to everyone present at the breakfast, and we in turn are extending it to you and everyone in Memphis – Support just one Memphis musician. It can be as simple as signing up for their email list or going to a show. Every bit helps keep Memphis’s rich musical heritage going!

Plus, Dave filled us in on some upcoming BarCamp events within driving distance:

Even November is more than halfway through – the midpoint being marked by BarCamp Memphis. After any event like this it’s good to step back, take stock and look at what went right, what could’ve gone better and what we should ditch altogether. We call it the start/stop/keep style, and that’s where we need your help on Friday.

At our usual Core Conversation time (11:30 a.m. Central) we’ll be available to hear your thoughts on how we can make the next “camp” experience the best it can possibly be. You can listen to the entire podcast here, or dive in and let us know what you think by calling (646) 721-9429.
