Rethink the term “Young Entrepreneur,” folks, because Cole is an 11 year old man-with-a-plan. This past weekend, Cole took his and his brother’s idea for a musical instrument tutorial site to the 48 Hour Launch. Now, he has a domain, a Facebook page, Twitter (@bandtutor), and some real momentum behind his clever idea. Listen in for more information on Band Tutor from Cole, whom we must say is one very well-spoken 6th grader.

And a HUGE congratulations to everyone who contributed to the 48 Hour Launch. You are helping to move Memphis forward, and you deserve a good rest after all your hard work. We’ll be very excited to check back in with you on the evening of May 7 for the 48 Launch Reunion.

In other tech news, Google Goggles is one sweet app. Even more exciting, since the Android Market is finally online, that link for the Goggles app will actually take you to a site where you can buy and install it! Also on Android, Honeycomb has been released. It’s the new Android platform specifically designed for tablets, and at least one, the Motorola Xoom, will be available on February 24. Can’t wait to try it.

If you are also just the sort of person who get’s excited about tablets and apps, check out the Memphis Tech Lunch every Wednesday, 11:30am at Panera Bread on Poplar near Perkins. Follow Brian Swanson on Twitter for the updates.

Maybe WordPress is more your style, though, in which case definitely look into Beth Sanders’s WordPress Meetup group. The meet once a month at Republic, and at this past meeting, they packed the house!

Lastly, get excited for MobileCamp Memphis on May 7. Why a mobile camp? Well we will tell you why here!

We’ve given this start-up a lot of attention in recent weeks, but rightfully so. Our February Breakfast guest was Aaron Prather, CEO of stiQRd and QR Code know-it-all. When we last spoke to him for our Social Expedition podcast, his team was preparing for 48 Hour Launch. If you missed the podcast, StiQRd is a location-based check-in service (like Foursquare or Gowalla), but it’s unique characteristic is in the program’s marriage of QR codes and GPS location. Fresh, and sleep-deprived, from the LaunchMemphis weekend, he spoke to us this morning about their latest developments and educated us more thoroughly about the virtual loyalty program that is expected to be out of beta test and in an app store near you by April. But don’t miss out on the fun until then – you can apply to be a tester now. stiQRd has been received with a resounding “awesome!” and will have at least ten venues on board by the end of the month (they’re basically already there). Become a fan, follow them on Twitter, and sign-up for beta testing. Still not convinced? Since launching their social platforms last week, they’ve collected 82 Facebook fans and 123 Twitter followers. Their website has collected 551 unique site visitors with 989 unique page views. Support this start-up, and your tech community!

There was a lot of interest in WordPress at the breakfast, but we had our favorite WordPress-er Beth Sanders there to educate us when we broke out into roundtable discussion. If you haven’t checked out her monthly MeetUp, please do so. In fact, they’re meeting this Thursday night (Feb. 3) at 6:00PM at Republic Coffee. (Psst… if you check in there on foursquare, you can get a free cup of their coffee of the day). Free coffee and knowledge? I dare you to pass it up.

If you couldn’t make it, make sure to put the following events on your calendar. And, please, come next time – we love your smiling faces!

MobileCampMemphis: May 7, EmergeMemphis – Start planning your presentations now!

IgniteMemphis 2: As soon as we have this date nailed down, we’ll let you know. Just know that it’s soon, and it’s awesome, so you should come. Presenters will have exactly 5 minutes to impart a little information about just about anything. You can check out Ignite Memphis 1 footage at ignitememphis.com.

But here are a few links that you’ll hear about:

Then, you’ll definitely want to check out the video below of the Man with the Golden Voice. As Dave notes on the podcast, this man’s story is a truly great example of how social media can bring about social good. When this video went viral, this man got a second chance at life.

Only a few hours until champagne and resolutions, so while we had some time left before next year, the Social Expedition took the liberty of gazing into our fancy high-res crystal ball to see if we could decipher the future.

We couldn’t, but we can still make some guesses. Listen in for our predictions, and then let us know some of yours at the Breakfast on Wednesday, January 5! It’s our “Predictions 2011 Panel” Breakfast, so bring your best guesses into the next year of social media. RSVP here if you haven’t already!

Then, Dave catches up with Andre Natta, publisher and managing editor of the Terminal, a Birmingham hyperlocal blog. We hope you’ll bear with us through a little wind and ambient noise (there might be a cat in there somewhere), as Dave met Andre down at Tom Lee Park. Don’t miss a few of Andre’s predictions, as well as a few cool tidbits about the social scene down in Alabama’s capital. Catch up with Andre on Twitter or Facebook, too!

We hope that everyone will be safe on New Year’s Eve, especially on the roads. To help you, check out DriveReply, for Android and Blackberry, an app which will detect if you are traveling at over 15 mph and automatically stop notifications of calls and texts to your phones. It will also send an auto reply to the person trying to contact you. Take away your temptation to text and drive!!

Lastly, while we’re on the subject of predictions – watch this completely awesome video of a Nokia concept phone. It won’t be here in 2011, but they’re hoping by 2019… Nokia Morph Concept. Happy New Year!!

Can using your cell phone on an airplane cause the controls to malfunction? Apparently not. But since take-off and landing are the most likely times for some kind of problem, the airlines probably ask you to “turn off all electronics” so you aren’t distracted in the case of an emergency. Or perhaps, as Andy Glover suggested, they’re just trying to ensure that BrickBreaker is not your last act on Earth. Learn something new everyday!

Our holiday Twilight Camp was nice and chill last night, but of course, we all got a little excited when the conversation turned to the iPad 2. Right now, it’s all conjecture, but we hear the iPad 2 might be here as soon as April, with a retina screen and two cameras just like the iPhone 4. How do we feel about it? Well, “Eeee!” about sums it.

Then we launched into the Aggregator/Distribution conversation. Is it okay to push the same message to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn? Here at the Social Expedition, we stand behind the idea that different social media platforms deserve different messages, taylored to their unique format. That said, running several social media accounts can be time-consuming, so we can definitely appreciate a good multi-platform management tool. That is, as long as it isn’t used to publish the exact same message to many sites. We tend to favor Hootsuite, but several folks at Twilight Camp swear by Tweetdeck. They’re both free (Hootsuite up to 5 social accounts free), so give them a try and let us know which you prefer! We’ve been hearing good things about SproutSocial, a premium social aggregation tool, and we’d love to hear your feedback if you’re using it!

Another tip for our multiple account managers: when you use a URL shortener like Bit.ly or Budurl, set up different shortened addresses for Twitter and Facebook. That way, you can look at the stats later and know where you’re getting more traffic from!

In other Twilight Camp discussions, we found that FBML landing pages are so hip, cloud-based services are on the rise, and we all want to get our hands on the Chrome OS netbooks that Google is giving out for free. Sign up here if you want to apply for the Pilot Program!

Last question – do you prefer reading on the iPad or an e-reader like the Kindle?

November’s Twilight Camp was about 3 years ago, but fortunately we took some notes and finally have a recap. We discussed several trends branching across several tech categories:

Content Farms: What are they and are they the root of evil or good? The purpose of Content Farms are to increase SEO results. Agencies like Demand Media are making big bucks by writing countless articles a day and plugging them into databases in order to increase content and traffic. For more information, check out this article.

Bing vs. Google: Are you paying attention to your “Social Circle” search results? Bing is the pioneer here, and Google has released this in beta form. Do you read articles based on reviews within your social circle? If one of your friends “like it,” do you read it? During this discussion Dave mentioned Bynamite.com, which allows you to see how internet advertisers “see” you based on the sites you visit.

Social Sphere: We talked about how easy it is to lose ourselves on multiple social networking sites a day, privacy settings, and the different audiences we speak to on Twitter and Facebook. From there, a new social platform was introduced: Path. Path’s difference is that users are allowed only 50 friends. Can we benefit from this? Would this nurture more authentic relationships with the people we maintain contact with? You can also check out Rescuetime.com to see exactly how much time you’re spending on Facebook and Twitter – if you really want to know.

Email Services: We reminisced about the days of yore and email, then discussed the benefits of Mail Chimp and Constant Contact (though we personally love Campaign Monitor). The benefits of each are the statistics they provide as well as the ability to block spam. There are trial periods for each so give them a test drive before making a decision.

And then there was the Girl Talk interlude via Simon and Garfunkle praise. If you know what’s good for you, download the illegal? legal? album for free here.

Alright, that may have been an obvious title for the podcast, given the guest. But a fascinating guest! Maggie Louie is the Online Media Specialist and Product Manager at the E. W. Scripps Company, which (amongst other things), is responsible for the awesome Inside Scoop daily deals, which can be seen everyday on the homepage of The Commercial Appeal and GoMemphis.com.

In addition to being an e-commerce pro, we were delighted to find out Maggie is something of a geek. Listen in to hear us get nerdy about click-through rates, the “post-deal-dip,” and learn about the new daily deal site that Scripps will be rolling out in Memphis shortly.

Connect with the Inside Scoop on their website, sign up to get the emails, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter @insidescoop901. Or, find Maggie herself on Twitter @maggielouie.

In other podcast minutes, we’ve got some highlights from the Apple event yesterday, plus a truly unique merging of Foursquare and politics. Sounds like a bad idea? Well, it’s still fun to talk about.

We hope to see you tonight at Twilight Camp (5:30 at the LunaWeb offices), but definitely get excited about BarCampMemphis, which is JUST around the corner on November 13.

After a brief podcast hiatus, we have returned! And with a great interview with Glen Thomas from MLGW. Although the utility company is perhaps not in an industry one would immediately imagine finding much use social media, MLGW has found Twitter to be especially effective as a quick communication tool. They answer questions about outages and billing, and even share links about energy conservation! What had been a faceless utility company now has a voice and personality – and that’s what we love about social media. Find MLGW on Twitter at @MLGW or on Facebook!
